The downside of corruption

(Scott Johnson)

Senior Clinton campaign strategist Joel Benenson appeared on FOX News Sunday yesterday. As the interview concluded, Chris Wallace raised a particularly interesting question based on one of the revelations from John Podesta’s hacked email account.

Benenson acknowledged in February 2015 Clinton would be “very vulnerable” to attacks over the Clinton Foundation’s foreign contributions, which he said would be viewed as “unseemly” by Republicans and some Democrats, according to one hacked email chain. Reacting to a Wall Street Journal article about increasing foreign gifts to the foundation two months before the official launch of Clinton’s campaign, Benenson suggested that the foundation “immediately” stop accepting such contributions.

That’s the trouble with gross corruption from a strategic perspective. It’s gross. It looks bad.

Wallace asks Benenson about the email. Benenson doesn’t deny the authenticity of the email, but he refuses to authenticate it.

He attributes the hacking to “Russian interference.”

He testifies to the foundation’s good works.

He circumvents a direct response to Wallace’s question.

All in all, this is an outstanding preview of coming attractions in 100 seconds.
