Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) on Wednesday called college students "morons" for ignoring their studies to protest President-elect Donald Trump.

"These college students, I find it incredible," he told host Jay Oliver on LI News Radio's "LI in the AM." "I don't know what would happen if a real war ever came.

"Are these the morons we're counting on to be leaders in the future? Come on, have some guts. Have some nerve. Get out there. We're supposed to be a great country."

King mocked college campuses for going to extreme lengths to accommodate students disappointed by Trump's White House win.

"You think back to the greatest generation," began King, who backed Trump over Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

"And now you have these people, they're having crying sessions, they're giving them comfort dogs, they're giving them group therapy, they're giving them consolation, because they're so upset that Hillary Clinton lost the election."

King added he is disappointed by any demonstrations against Trump, saying no one is disputing his win.

"I think it's really unfortunate. We do have elections for a purpose and nobody's contesting the fact Donald Trump won it honestly. In that case he should be supported. That's part of the way the system works."

Protests have since erupted in multiple cities across the country since the billionaire's unexpected victory last week.

Many participants have chanted "not my president" during such demonstrations, which have appeared in locations ranging from Boston to Portland.

Trump in an interview broadcast last Sunday reassured Americans who are nervous about his administration that he means them no harm.

"I would tell them, 'Don't be afraid,' absolutely," he said on CBS News's "60 Minutes." "We are going to bring our country back, but certainly, don't be afraid."
