I hate this primary season. It seems never-ending. And it appears we're past the point of vetting our candidates and have moved into the phase of rehashing old news. Over and over and over again. And in the process, we've bloodied ourselves while losing sight of the real enemy: the left.
Don't get me wrong. I am celebrating the fact that the primary has been turned upside-down, with the assumed frontrunner relegated to the back of the pack. But we're now at the point where the two frontrunners (Trump and Cruz) have many supporters who appear deeply dug in as each side bashes the other, citing all manner of proof for why their candidate is the only one worthy of winning and why the other candidate is dreadful. And to be perfectly honest, early on in the primary season, I participated in the bashing myself. And I regret it.
Meanwhile, we've got power brokers at the RNC who are untrustworthy and may well do everything in their power to ensure that neither of the current frontrunners wins the nomination. And if one of them does win, there is every reason to believe that the RNC will not fully support his campaign (at best) or will outright undermine it (at worst).
What a mess.
No doubt the left is sitting back and enjoying the show.
My take on all of this is that many of us feel the stakes are as high as they get – so high that the 2016 presidential election may be the last chance we have to save our country (assuming it's not already too late). The pressure to get it right reminds me of the multi-step process to ensure that the crew on Apollo 13 would be brought safely back to Earth. One chance. No room for error. The needle must be threaded.
The stress many of us feel is enormous. But good Lord, let's please stop attacking each other like a person who comes home from a bad day at work and takes it out on his family. We are not each other's enemies. The enemy is the left, and that must be our laser focus. Because while we're arguing among ourselves, the left continues to advance. And now, unfortunately, lumped in with them, we've got our own party to worry about. (And of course, there is always the media that dishes out propaganda.) We can hope to win this gargantuan battle only if we are united.
In the new year, I hope and pray we can all work to support our candidate of choice with dignity, knowing that if "the other" candidate wins the primary, we will support him with all our heart and soul. And then some.
