People keep running away from Democratic states and toward Republican ones

The net migration away from states dominated by Democrats and toward those led by Republican administrations is continuing apace.

Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) just released its latest analysis of IRS datareflecting net interstate migration trends, and GOP-led states continue to offer a haven for people seeking lower taxes, a freer business climate and more wallet-friendly retirement options.

Unsurprisingly, the Democratic states with the greatest populations, and/or the most entrenched Democratic political machinery, once again top the list of net-loss states. New York lost the most, with a net 114,929 people leaving for one of the red states — and carrying $5.7 billion in adjusted gross income (AGI) with them.

New York is followed by Illinois, California, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

On the other side, Texas gained the most new residents from blue states, welcoming a net 152,912 people and an estimated $6 billion in AGI. The Lone Star State is followed by Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina and Arizona.

It isn’t hard to figure out what attracts overtaxed and overregulated people to Republican-led states, Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, explained.

“People move away from high tax states to low tax states. Every tax refugee is sending a powerful message to politicians,” he said. “They are voting with their feet. Leaders in Texas and Florida are listening. New York and California are not.”

To put some perspective on the net population loss blue states are experiencing, ATR breaks it down into a simple ratio: “Only one-third of states with Democrat governors gained taxpayers, compared to three-fifths of states with Republican governors.”

That’s great — so long as the blue state newcomers don’t bring their former leaders’ statist ideas and one-size-fits-all urbanist worldview with them — a frequent complaint of native, conservative Coloradans who’ve welcomed a growing influx of interstate migrants from California.
