WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Al Gore insiders say they are meeting to discuss among themselves the possibility of the former vice president running for president in 2016.

One of Gore's supporters told BuzzFeed "they're getting the old gang together."

"They're figuring out if there's a path financially and politically," the senior Democrat said. "It feels more real than it has in the past months."

A political adviser confirmed the news to ABC News, saying Gore's friends and former aides are having a "soft conversation" about the 2016 election.

Gore, 67, was the Democratic nominee for president in 2000, and though he won the popular vote, he lost the election for former President George W. Bush. He has yet to make any formal or informal comments about the possibility of running in 2016.

"This is people talking to people, some of whom may or may not have talked to him," an insider told BuzzFeed.

One former top adviser, Roy Neel, said he hadn't spoken to Gore but said the idea of him running for president is "extremely unlikely."
