Obama to troops: If you like your boots not being on the ground in Syria, you can keep them

The broken promises are all kind of morphing together and are difficult to keep straight, but maybe that's part of the strategy.

Fast forward to today:

The U.S. will send a small number of U.S. special operations forces into Syria as part of a shift in its strategy against ISIS, White House officials announced Friday.

President Barack Obama has authorized a contingent of less than 50 commandos to deploy into northern Syria and work with moderate opposition forces who are fighting the militants.

While the White House has consistently said it would not put U.S. boots on the ground, spokesman Josh Earnest insisted that they will be there in a "train, advise and assist mission" — and not in a combat role.

No word on whether that 50 includes the five Syrian rebel guys we spent a few hundred million dollars to train. Just to avoid any charges of another broken promise, the White House probably won't even refer to them as "troops" either -- watch for Josh Earnest to reference to "red line placement technicians" or "re-set button search and rescue teams" at future pressers.

And naturally the administration will later say that worsening climate change made the Syria policy "shift" a necessity.
