Trump’s party: Is he really a Republican?

Trump’s party: Is he really a Republican?

What, exactly, makes Donald Trump a Republican?

In the opening of last Friday’s Republican presidential debate, Trump refused to rule out running for President as an independent if he did not get the Republican nomination. He refused to pledge to support the eventual Republican nominee. These are basic tests of party loyalty, and he failed them.

He said during the debate that single-payer health care “works in Canada, it works incredibly well in Scotland.” Single-payer health care means socialized health insurance, which Republicans oppose.

Trump has ruled out touching federal entitlement programs. He has criticized all Republican presidential candidates who propose any changes that will save Social Security or reform Medicare and Medicaid, calling reform proposals “attacks” on entitlement programs.

He once proposed a 14.25 percent tax on the net worth of anyone with assets of $10 million or more, a leftist wealth transfer scheme not even Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama would dare suggest.

In his own book in 2000, he supported an “assault weapons” ban.

A single one of these points would prompt conservatives to question any other candidate’s bona-fides. In sum, they show that Trump is far out of step with the party whose presidential nomination he so aggressively seeks.
