Media: Jon Stewart isn't a fearless, funny comedian who bravely skewers politicians of all stripes with his wicked humor, sarcasm and invective. But he plays one on TV. In reality, he's just another left-wing media toady.

As Stewart prepares for his final "Daily Show" taping on Aug. 6, maybe we shouldn't be surprised that, as Politico reported Tuesday, he has taken secret trips to the White House so President Obama could try to influence his show. We doubt that he did the same thing for George W. Bush.

But it goes even beyond that. It turns out that staffers of the "Daily Show" called up the White House periodically to kick around ideas. Hey, how's that for edgy?

"Austan Goolsbee, a former top economic adviser to the president, frequently emailed his college classmate Scott Bodow, a 'Daily Show' executive producer, to offer spin," the New York Post wrote. "Obama flunky David Axelrod often reached out directly to Stewart."

Obama himself, we're told, would "summon" Stewart to the White House for talks. Or were they instructions? Did Stewart ask permission to tell some jokes?

So much for the image of Stewart as a fearless humorist, a latter-day Will Rogers or H.L. Mencken, raking those in power over the coals of his searing wit.
