Obama Will Jetset To The Arctic To Warn About Global Warming
The Obama administration will kick off a massive campaign Monday to push the president’s agenda to cut carbon dioxide emissions just months ahead of the United Nation’s global warming summit in Paris.
This climate campaign, oddly enough, includes a trip to the Alaskan Arctic by President Barack Obama to “call attention to the effects of global warming,” according to The Washington Post — which was briefed on the administration’s new campaign by an unnamed source prior to its unveiling to the public.
“Power plants are the single biggest source of the harmful carbon pollution that contributes to the climate change,” Obama said in the transcript of a video that was given to The Washington Post. “But until now, there have been no federal limits to the amount of that pollution those plants can dump into the air. Think about that.”
Ironically, Obama’s trip to the Arctic will emit lots of carbon dioxide — the very greenhouse gas he blames for causing catastrophic global warming. Yet as he’s prepared to emits tons to highlight why rising emissions are detrimental to the planet, he’s calling the EPA’s carbon dioxide rules for power plants “the biggest, most important step we’ve ever taken to combat climate change.”
Using calculations from the president’s flight to the Everglades for Earth Day, Obama will travel at least 3,361 miles from Washington, D.C., to Alaska’s Elmendorf Air Force Base (where Air Force One generally stops to refuel). During that trip, Air Force One will consume some 16,805 gallons of jet fuel, which emits more CO2 when burned than conventional gasoline.
Based on government data, Obama’s jaunt to the Arctic aboard Air Force One will emit about 354, 585 pounds of carbon dioxide, or about 161 metric tonnes, for just that one leg of the flight. That’s equivalent to what 22 homes emit from burning electricity every year or the annual emissions from driving 33 cars, according to the EPA’s own carbon footprint calculator.
Obama has been criticized before about making big pronouncements on global warming while emitting tons of carbon dioxide emissions in the process. On Earth Day, Obama got slammed for flying down to the Everglades in Florida to talk about the dangers of global warming.
The White House did not respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment on why Obama needs to burn the annual energy needs of 22 households’ flying to the Arctic in order to highlight global warming.
