Life imitates art in Trumps campaign

In a happier world, Donald Trump would not fill America’s front pages today. The next president will face many grave challenges. Mr Trump—a belligerent property tycoon seeking the Republican nomination—offers coherent solutions to none of them. Instead he promises to slap protectionist tariffs on imports and to build a border wall against immigrants (for which he says he would make Mexico pay). Alas, he cannot be ignored. For weeks he has led the 17-strong Republican field, with up to a quarter of conservatives saying they like his anti-establishment anger enough to want him as their candidate. New polls will show whether Mr Trump has been slowed by his latest outburst: his verbal attack on a female Fox News presenter who asked him difficult questions at a TV debate (an attack which sounded to many like a claim that she was crazed by menstruation). Democrats cannot believe their luck.
