Trump: NY Times pushing Dem narrative that Russia working for me

Donald Trump on Wednesday slammed The New York Times for "pushing" the idea that the GOP nominee has links with Russia.

"Funny how the failing @nytimes is pushing Dems narrative that Russia is working for me because Putin said 'Trump is a genius,'" he tweeted.

"America 1st!"

Emails released by WikiLeaks last week showed top officials at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) apparently planning how to undermine Bernie Sanders's presidential campaign.

Several news outlets reported that evidence links the hacker to Russia. President Obama on Tuesday acknowledged the possibility that Russians hacked the DNC to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.

Obama said Russian President Vladimir Putin may prefer Trump to Hillary Clinton because the GOP nominee has "repeatedly expressed admiration" for Putin.

Throughout his campaign, Trump has offered praise for the Russian president. He has called Putin a "strong leader" and has said he would "get along with him."

Putin has also offered kind words for Trump, calling him a "really brilliant and talented person."

Trump on Monday said it was laughable that Russia would help his presidential campaign by leaking the emails.

Hillary Clinton's campaign manager Robby Mook on Tuesday said it wasn't a "coincidence" that the emails were released the weekend before the Democratic National Convention, but declined to say whether he thought Trump's campaign directed Russia to hack the DNC.
