On Leadership and Courage

By   |  April 28, 2016, 11:30am

The timid civilized world has found nothing with which to oppose the onslaught of a sudden revival of barefaced barbarity, other than concessions and smiles.”

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn When we consider Solzhenitsyn’s quote, we understand why the left calls us silly for “suddenly” getting all upset about bathrooms. (Of course we didn’t get upset about bathrooms until the left, empowered by Democrat influence at all levels of government and especially in the judiciary, “suddenly” decided to turn gender norms that have survived throughout human history on their head.) The core reason these norms are being destroyed, and why so many on the left act like that’s no big deal, is because of their cowardice masked as compassion.

Our world is desperate for moral clarity and courageous leadership. It is so desperate in fact that Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump are actually being considered by otherwise sane adults as courageous leaders. In fact it has been so long since the public has seen Churchill style leadership that it actually has mistaken Trump’s bluster, chutzpah and rudeness, and Sander’s buffoonery for “telling it like it is” courage.

In the case of the bathroom controversy (the left can’t help itself, its causes, like its art always devolve into the absurd), having a Springsteen or a PayPal boycott North Carolina or Hillary criticize them do not represent a courageous stand for inclusion, instead they are a manifestation of a cowardly running over the cliff with the madding crowd. Taking a stand for gender norms and traditional marriage, as this website has done and continues to do, represents actual courage.

A lack of courage permeates the highest levels of government, most starkly within the Obama administration. Thus global warming (a pretend threat with pretend solutions) becomes more dangerous than ISIS (a real threat that the left prefers to pretend is not a threat so that it doesn’t have to make hard decisions…plus, the left mostly agrees with ISIS’ worldview). And the beat goes on.

  • Israel is bad. Hamas is good.
  • Gender that changes with mood is good. Saying that men should use the men’s room should become a federal offense.
  • Churchill’s statue must be removed from the White House. But up with the Mayo Christmas ornament.
  • Christianity is oppressive. Islam is a religion of peace.

The man quoted above, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, was a brilliant Christian writer who lived under the thumb of a different evil, Soviet Communism. He spent years in a gulag because he spoke out against that evil. In a 1978 speech to Harvard University, he warned this nation about this pattern of cowardice that he had already noticed developing in our leadership. In that same speech he also said this:

A decline in courage may be the most striking feature which an outside observer notices in the West. The Western world has lost its civil courage…Such a decline in courage is particularly noticeable among the ruling groups and the intellectual elite, causing an impression of loss of courage by the entire society. Of course there are many courageous individuals but they have no determining influence on public life...”

How prophetic Solzhenitsyn was.
