ISIS Blows Up Historic 600-Year-Old Virgin Mary Church Considered Town’s Identity

The “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant” (ISIL) has blown up a historic church in Tal Kaif, north of Mosul, using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted under the church foundations, the Ninawa tribal council said Wednesday (March 4th).

“ISIL elements have today blown up the historical 600-year-old Virgin Mary Church in Tal Kaif, angering citizens who considered it to be the identity of their town and part of their heritage,” Ninawa tribal council deputy head Ibrahim al-Hassan told Al-Shorfa.

The church was detonated after ISIL elements looted its contents, he said.
