Chris Matthews Makes Outrageous Statement About the Tea Party

Chris Matthews Makes Outrageous Statement About the Tea Party

MSNBC's Chris Matthews asked Thursday whether members of the Tea Party "count blacks as three-fifths" when they talk about the will of the American people.

Matthews was of course referring to when blacks were only counted as three-fifths of a person when it came to taxation and representation.

"What the right - the small part of the Republican Party, maybe a third of it - was willing to do was show no respect for who's president, for the voters who elected him," Matthews said after President Barack Obama's remarks on the end of the partial government shutdown. "They have this weird 'we' they refer to. 'We the American people.'"

Matthews questioned why "a group that always loses elections, or tends to do lately, why do they call themselves the American people?"

"Do they still count blacks as three-fifths? Three-fifths of a vote?" he asked. "There's this 'we' I'm very worried about, like we're more American than the rest. We should get a higher weighting to who 'we' are? I think it's dangerous."
