There's No Urgency to Pass Chuck Schumer's Bill | RealClearPolitics

Chuck Schumer predicts mass demonstrations, and “the next major civil rights movement”, if the House blocks his legalization first path to citizenship. I doubt it. While Americans generally want to legalize those who are here, they intrinsically want to have confidence this approach will prevent this problem from recurring in the future. The recent CBO study has its flaws, but even accepting its assumptions, they anticipate we will have millions here a decade from now illegally. That’s not solving anything. We have to have a neutral trigger for “yes, we have border security”, not one built on bureaucracy's assessments, or on legalization first.

As for Schumer’s threat, there’s little danger for House Republicans in rejecting a bill built to satisfy business and unions, not the interests of the American people or security. Republicans need to abandon premise they can work with Democrats on this issue at this time, or that they need this unpopular bill to survive as a coalition. Instead, they can set citizenship aside and instead embark on small bill strategy.
