GOP SOTU talking points - POLITICO.com

GOP SOTU talking points - POLITICO.com

House Republicans are coming out with a coordinated message before President Barack Obama’s State of the Union, urging its members to go “on offense” in their response to the president’s annual address.
According to a list of messaging points, forwarded by a Hill source, Republicans plan to focus on the imminent sequester, their opposition to higher taxes, and potentially damaging effects of the Affordable Care Act.
“With President Obama’s State of the Union (SOTU) Address on deck tonight, House Republicans have a unique opportunity to counter the President’s message with one of more opportunity, more prosperity, and less government,” reads the memo from the House Republican Conference. “It is no secret that the president is expected to give an aggressive speech that will lay out a very liberal agenda for his second term. It is critical that we are on offense.”
It’s part of a wider messaging strategy that includes the rollout of a new website that will provide insta-“fact checks” and rebuttals from House Republicans to Obama’s speech.
Here’s the list of the pre-State of the Union talking points circulated by the House Republican Conference:
* “The State of the Union is the President’s opportunity to share with Congress how he plans to solve the most serious challenges our country faces.”
* “Republicans hope the President will bring forward a credible plan to replace his sequester – arbitrary across the board cuts he proposed – with responsible spending cuts.”
“Republicans hope the President will share with the country how he plans to control spending, reduce the debt, and expand opportunity for all Americans without raising taxes.”
* “Republicans hope the President will talk about his plan to protect hardworking Americans from the negative impacts of ObamaCare, including higher health care costs and loss of coverage.”
