Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump in the battleground states of Pennsylvania and Ohio and is virtually tied with him in Florida, according to a new poll on the presidential race released Tuesday.
A new Quinnipiac University poll found the Democratic nominee leading her GOP counterpart 10 points in Pennsylvania, 52 to 42 percent; 4 points in Ohio, 49 to 45 percent; and 1 point in Florida, 46 to 45 percent, which is within the survey's margin of error.
When the race becomes a four-way contest with Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson and Green Party nominee Jill Stein, Clinton and Trump are still tied in Florida and her lead slightly narrows in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
"This Swing State Poll shows a mixed result for the presidential candidates, although certainly with an overall edge for Secretary Hillary Clinton," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. "She has a double-digit lead in Pennsylvania and the narrowest of edges in Ohio, but Florida, with the largest cache of Electoral College votes, is a tie."
"When voters are asked about a four-way ballot that includes Libertarian Gary Johnson and Green Party nominee Jill Stein, Trump picks up a point or two against Secretary Clinton in each of the three states."
Both nominees have negative favorability ratings in this poll, but Clinton leads Trump among female voters ranging anywhere from 13 to 23 points. Trump holds a smaller lead among male voters, ranging from 5 to 12 points.
The Quinnipiac swing-state poll comes as Clinton has seen a bump in the polls both nationally and in battleground states, as well as more GOP-leaning states.
The poll was conducted from July 30 to Aug. 7 via phone. It surveyed 1,056 Florida likely voters with a margin of error of 3 percentage points; 812 Ohio likely voters with a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points; and 815 Pennsylvania likely voters with a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.
