The father of the man suspected of killing dozens of people inside a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla. says in a new video that he doesn't know what motivated his son.
Seddique Mateen, father of Orlando suspect Omar Mateen who died in a shootout with police after gunning down the 49 people and injuring many more, posted the video to Facebook early Monday.
In the video, the elder Mateen says his son was well-educated and respected his parents, adding that he was "not aware what motivated him to go into a gay club and kill 50 people," according to CBS News.
Mateen said in the video that "God will punish those involved in homosexuality," according to CBS, adding that it's "not an issue that humans should deal with."The New York Times' translation of Seddique Mateen's quote, however, reads: "Only God can punish homosexuality."
Leaders from around the country, including President Obama condemned the attack on the gay nightclub, which came during Pride Month and on a weekend when some cities were celebrating LGBT rights.
Seddique Mateen had spoken to media on Sunday following the shooting, when he expressed sorrow for the incident, saying the family was "in shock like the rest of America."
He added that the shooting "had nothing to do with religion," though several Muslims groups denounced the violence.
