The Iran letter: Tom Cotton's public service

The Iran letter: Tom Cotton's public service

Negotiating a nuclear arms deal with Iran, President Obama made clear that he would not submit it to Congress for approval. Given how weak the deal was turning out to be, U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ariz., thought the U.S. Senate could strengthen it even if President Obama cut it out of its customary role. For that, he has been called a traitor. He should be thanked instead.

Cotton cleverly got 46 other Republican senators to sign a letter to Iran notifying its leaders that unless the Senate approves the agreement, it is not legally binding and could be undone by the next President. That is it. (The letter can be read at cotton.senate.gov.)

The Obama administration and its servile apologists (in politics and the media) let fly the venom. But on Wednesday Secretary of State John Kerry validated the letter's usefulness by admitting that Cotton was right, the Iran deal was not "a legally binding plan."

Kerry's own state department lists Iran as a "state sponsor of terrorism." Cotton's letter exposed that the Obama administration's deal would lift economic sanctions against Iran in exchange for promises that would not be legally binding.

All the Republican senators want is a tough deal that prevents Iran from actually getting the bomb. Obama's deal fails to do that, which is why he refuses to submit it to the Senate. With their letter, Cotton and his fellow signatories, including U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, have exposed Obama's Iran deal as a nonbinding fraud. That is not treason; it is public service.
