Hillary’s Islamophilia

After the bloodiest mass shooting in American history, Hillary Clinton commented that she is “happy to say” either “radical jihadism or radical Islamism” caused it. Her use of the phrase “radical jihadism” is curious. Does a non-radical jihadism exist in her mind? Perhaps. After all, her old colleague John Brennan, who is Obama’s CIA director, once sought to sanitize the concept of jihad by defining it as a “holy struggle, a legitimate tenet of Islam, meaning to purify oneself or one’s community.”

Her use of “radical Islamism” instead of “radical Islam” is also telling. Sticking “ism” at the end of Islam evidently makes it less of a criticism of the religion in her mind. The apologists for Islam in the George W. Bush administration used to play that game too, calling anything bad in Islamic countries “Islamism,” to make it sound as if it was coming not from the Koran and Hadith but from an off-the-wall ideological accretion on an otherwise blameless religion.

Hillary never tiptoes around Christianity so sensitively. She has spoken often of her frank fear of the “religious right.” Where Islam deserves in her mind a generous interpretation, Christianity merits a stern one. She and her supporters frequently talk about Christians as a threat to “progress.” When they opposed gay marriage during California’s Proposition 8 fight, Clinton supporter Tom Hanks called them “un-American.” When Christians opposed Hillary’s “reproductive agenda” as head of the State Department, she pouted that “religious beliefs and structural biases have to change.” The promotion of the LGBT agenda globally was a “priority” of her tenure, she said, taking pride in instructing diplomats to “raise concerns about specific cases and laws.” But the Islamic world was exempt from this campaign. While she lobbied Christian countries in Africa to liberalize their laws, she fell silent during her trips to the Middle East.

“What I won’t do, because I think it is dangerous for our efforts to defeat this threat, is to demonize and demagogue and declare war on an entire religion,” she said this week about Islam. Meanwhile, she pals around with Planned Parenthood activists who regularly demonize, demagogue, and declare war on Christianity. Even as they trash Trump for his “paranoid” proposal to ban immigrants from hotbeds of Islamic terrorism, they have got their eyes peeled for Christian bakers and wedding photographers. They don’t feel the need to moderate their feverish rhetoric about a religion that threatens to deprive a handful of Americans of decorated wedding cakes and free contraceptives. For Hillary and her friends, that is an “oppressive” religion in need of reform. But could one imagine, say, Elizabeth Warren ever describing Islam as a “war on women”? If she ever did, she would lose her speaking slot at the Democratic convention.

The Democrats long ago decided to become the party of Islamophilia and Hillary joined in this boosterism. In 1996, she hosted the White House’s first Ramadan feast. The more non-western the religion, the more Democrats warm up to it. And it has paid political dividends for them. Cynically, Muslims, sizing the Dems up as useful idiots, voted overwhelmingly for Obama, despite his support for causes they see as degenerate. They will cast a similar vote for Hillary. Yet were she living in a country like Saudi Arabia, Islamic donors to her campaign wouldn’t let her drive, much less run for high office.

They are grateful to the Dems for their lax immigration policy, their badmouthing of Israel, and their reflexive calls of “Islamophobia.” After the Fort Hood shooting by a known jihadist, General George Casey, whom Obama made the army’s chief of staff, offered the astonishing comment, “And as horrific as this tragedy was, if our diversity becomes a casualty, I think that’s worse.” That hierarchy of priorities is now enshrined in law. The Orlando shooting is a window on Obama’s transformed America, where diversity became more prized than safety. Like Nidal Hasan in Texas and Syed Farook in San Bernardino, Omar Mateen enjoyed the immunity of political correctness. His jihadist views were known but ignored in the name of diversity.

As millions of dollars poured into the Clinton Foundation from Islamic thugs across the globe, Bill and Hillary became shills for Islam, with Bill rattling on about the Crusades and Hillary talking about the importance of “showing respect even for one’s enemies” and “trying to understand, in so far as psychologically possible, with their perspective and point of view.”

Hillary’s minor retreat from these rationalizations this week is meaningless. Her commitment to America’s defense is no less tentative than her terminology.
