Romney: Kasich has a 'real track record'

Mitt Romney took to the campaign trail on Monday in an effort to boost Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who's battling for support in his home state with Republican presidential rival Donald Trump.

"You look at this guy and, unlike the other people running, he has a real track record," Romney said in North Canton, Ohio. "He has the kind of record that you want in Washington."

The 2012 presidential nominee reminded Ohio voters of Kasich's first years as governor, and praised his work to turn an $8 billion deficit into a surplus.

"When he got in, you know, he made a lot of changes. A lot of people said, 'boy this is uncomfortable,' but those changes made a difference," Romney said.

He also noted Kasich's years in Congress and service on the House Armed Services Committee.

"America is looking to Ohio to do a job interview," Romney told the audience, pointing to Kasich. "In this case, this guy is going to be on the grill. You are the ones that are going to decide if he becomes the next president of the United States."

Monday's appearance was the first on the campaign trial for Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who has been a vocal critic of Trump and has called on voters to support one of the billionaire's three remaining rivals.

Romney has made robocalls for Kasich and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and offered to work with Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) in an effort to stop Trump from securing the GOP nomination.

Polls have shown a tight race between Kasich and Trump in Ohio, while Trump holds a sizable lead in Florida polls. Both are winner-take-all states with a large number of delegates at stake in Tuesday's primaries.
