We’d Have Gone to Def Con One, But Somebody Had the Wrench

We’d Have Gone to Def Con One, But Somebody Had the Wrench

By Geoffrey Normanon Fri, 14 Nov 2014

The nation’s nuclear arsenal has been neglected, says Defense Secretary Hagel, in a time of conventional warfare. Now, it is time to do some overhaul and repair and bring the big bombs, and their delivery systems, back up to scratch.

It will cost money.  Billions, perhaps.  Understandable when, as Bill Trott and David Brunnstrom of Reuters write, things had gotten to the point where:

… a single wrench needed to attach warheads to missiles had to be sent by Federal Express from one base to another.

But no worries:

"We now have a wrench for each location. We're going to have two wrenches for each location soon," Hagel said.
