The New York City subway station announced Friday that it will “modify” tiles in its subway station after people complained that they resemble Confederate flags.
The tiles have existed in the station for nearly 100 years, and the architects may have chosenthe design to honor the Southern heritage of a former New York Times head, according to Fox 5 NY. But the subway system claims the tiles pay homage to Times Square’s nickname “Crossroads of the World.”
“These are not confederate flags, it is a design based on geometric forms that represent the “Crossroads of the World” and to avoid absolutely any confusion we will modify them to make that absolutely crystal clear,” said the subway station to Fox 5 NY.
