RNC: Are The Top Democrats Investigating Russian Collusion More Concerned About The Truth Or Their Brand?

Matt Vespa

The ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), has been investigating Russian meddling in our elections, specifically whether any collusion between Trump campaign officials and the Russians occurred during the 2016 election, for months. For a time, there was zero evidence of collusion. Then, Donald Trump, Jr. released emails he exchanged with the publicist of a Russian pop star who said they had damning information on Hillary Clinton that was highly sensitive and part of the Putin regime’s effort to help Donald Trump win the election.   Did the meeting in which this information was revealed yield anything juicy? No. In fact, the election wasn’t even discussed. The meeting seems like it was a bait-and-switch. It was a poor decision to take it in June of 2016. I mean the optics are just terrible.  Is it solid evidence of actual collusion? No, but it does show that Trump, Jr. was collusion curious. Just as it looked like the flames of the Russia hysteria were burning down, Team Trump throws gasoline on it.

Then again, is Mr. Schiff truly concerned about finding the truth, or is he out to build his own audience with this issue grappling the Hill? After all, he’s given 14 hours worth of interviews to the news media since Trump was inaugurated (via Free Beacon):

Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff (Calif.) has done 123 national television interviews totaling more than 14 hours of air time since January, according to a tracking report provided to the White House.

The report comes on the heels of President Donald Trump attacking Schiff on Monday for his frequent TV appearances. The vast majority of them have been on cable networks CNN and MSNBC, although Schiff has also done interviews on Fox News, ABC, CBS, NBC, Comedy Central, and HBO.

According to the report, Schiff has been on television for 14 hours, 8 minutes, 55 seconds since Trump was inaugurated. He most recently appeared on the CBS program "Face The Nation" on Sunday.

The White House also provided a report that Sen. Mark Warner (D., Va.), the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, had done 60 interviews totaling 5 hours, 55 minutes and 13 seconds of air time since Trump took office.

Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel told the Washington Free Beacon that Schiff's and Warner's appearances were more about trying to "build their own brand" than providing updates on their investigations.

"Democrats are tripping over themselves to see who can get the most TV time to talk about the Russia investigation," she said in a statement. "It is shocking that Rep. Schiff and Sen. Warner have combined for more than 180 interviews and over 20 hours of TV time since inauguration day."

The Trump, Jr. email development is grounded in reality, but Democrats’ obsessions with finding something with this Russia stuff led to overreaching; some Democrats accused the president’s son of treason. It wasn’t. The top Democrats looking into this issue have given 180 interviews, totaling over 20 hours of airtime since Trump was inaugurated. That’s a lot of airtime for an issue that is not on the minds of voters outside of the D.C. beltway.
