Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine is doubling down on his opposition to using federal money to fund abortions - a position that clashes with Hillary Clinton's.

In an interview with CNN on Friday, the Virginia senator reaffirmed his support for the Hyde Amendment, which bans Medicaid and all other federal programs from funding abortions.

"I have been for the Hyde Amendment, I haven't changed my position on that," Kaine said.

Kaine officially became Clinton's running mate this week at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, where Clinton formally accepted the party's nomination for president.

Reports emerged this week that Kaine could support repealing the Hyde Amendment in a Clinton administration.

Clinton, along with most other Democrats, want to repeal the long-standing budget provision because they say it restricts the rights of low-income women.

Kaine, who is Catholic, says he is personally opposed to abortions but supports the legal right to one. He has earned a 100 percent rating from Planned Parenthood during his time in the Senate.

Earlier this week, a Clinton spokesman told Bloomberg News that Kaine has privately said he would support repealing the amendment.
