Hillary’s Lead Over Trump Evaporates

The latest New York Times/CBS News national poll finds Hillary Clinton has lost her 6-point lead over Donald Trump, leaving the two presumptive nominees tied at 40 percent each. Including Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson doesn't change things. He gets 12 percent of the vote, but Clinton and Trump remain tied, with 36 percent each.

The most important finding of the poll is that Independents have swung Trump's way. Independents were virtually split in last month's poll, but Trump now leads Clinton by 12 points among them. That supports similar findings in Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania by the Quinnipiac Swing State Poll.

Hillary is doing worse on trust and honesty. Sixty-seven percent of voters now say Hillary is not honest and trustworthy, up from 62 percent last month and the highest percentage this election cycle. As the number of voters who find Hillary dishonest and untrustworthy climb, the number who distrust The Donald remains constant at 62 percent. Both the Times and CBS blame Hillary's decline on the F.B.I. finding that Hillary was "extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified information." I think it has more to do with F.B.I. Director Comey disproving the various lies Hillary used to try to explain away her email scandal. Sadly, Hillary continues to lieabout her emails.

Keep in mind these bad poll numbers for Hillary come after Team Hillary outspent Team Trump by a 15-to-1 margin, $57 million to $3.6 million in ads.  Team Hillary should be in full panic mode.

Another interesting finding of the poll is that 61 percent of voters are not looking forward to the rest of this presidential campaign. Both Clinton and Trump supporters are similarly unenthusiastic about the election. That finding is supported by a new Pew Research Center survey, which found most Americans are already suffering from election coverage fatigue.

The New York Times/CBS News Poll was conducted July 8 to 12 and has a margin of error of plus or minus three percent.
