Carson: I'm not 'too nice' to run for president

Ben Carson insisted Sunday he's not "too nice" to run for president.

"I don't think there's anything wrong with being nice," the neurosurgeon and Republican presidential candidate said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

"But my life is multi-faceted," Carson added, launching into a recitation of his history and achievements, including growing up in a poor family, sitting on the boards of several large companies and starting a successful nonprofit.

The question was prompted by an earlier criticism of Carson, who ranks fourth in the Washington Examiner's presidential power rankings, by billionaire celebrity Donald Trump, a GOP front-runner who is feeling threatened by Carson's encroachment in the polls. Trump said Carson would be a poor candidate to lead the country because he can't "make a deal."

For his part, Carson has refused to lob back criticisms at Trump, saying only on Sunday that the "voters will choose" among the candidates.

And Carson spoke with gratitude about those giving to his campaign, which has more small, individual donors than any of the other GOP campaigns. Carson said that by the second presidential debate on Wednesday, he expects to have just under 500,000 donations averaging $50 each.

"When I think about people being willing to sacrifice that, there's no way I can let those people down," Carson said.
