Julie Bishop, Australia's foreign minister, says NATO is alarmed over dangerous materials that the Islamic State has taken from laboratories and hospitals, in particular nuclear material.
"This is really worrying them," Bishop told the Australian newspaper. And Britain's Independent, citing Australian intelligence, reports that IS has "enough radioactive material from government facilities to ... build a large and devastating 'dirty' bomb."
This is alarming on a number of levels. Just last month, IS announced its desire to create weapons of mass destruction and claimed it might be able to buy a working nuclear weapon from Pakistan within a year.
Given the shambles that U.S. Mideast policy is in after nearly seven years of diplomatic ineptitude, that's a very real and frightening threat. With the looming one-year anniversary of the establishment of the caliphate — really, the fall of Mosul to IS forces — the threat from the old al-Qaida is metastasizing.
That's a big reason Obama is sending 500 U.S. military "trainers" back to Anbar province in Iraq. It's unraveling faster than even he thought it might, and he's surely worried that feckless Democrats will be crushed in the next election if he doesn't at least appear to care.
