Hillary Lets the Veil Slip

Hillary Lets The Veil Slip: Religion Is A Problem To Be Disposed Of

Kudos to TheDC’s Kerry Picket for spotting the significance of this Hillary Clinton quote: “Laws [about reproductive health care and safe childbirth] have to be backed up with resources and political will,” Clinton said. “And deep-seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases have to be changed.”

If one is to assume that “reproductive health care” rights are a euphemism for abortion (a fairly safe assumption), then this is quite telling. Maybe it’s because she was speaking to a friendly audience (at the Women in The World Summit), but this honest appraisal is a reminder that politics are downstream from culture, and that uprooting long-standing religious and cultural beliefs are a prerequisite for utopian progressivism. As President Obama might say, we do tend to “cling to guns or religion.”

Hillary’s comments also remind me of something Frank Bruni wrote in a recent column, “Bigotry, the Bible and the Lessons of Indiana.” In that piece Bruni argues that

our debate about religious freedom should include a conversation about freeing religions and religious people from prejudices that they needn’t cling to and can indeed jettison, much as they’ve jettisoned other aspects of their faith’s history, rightly bowing to the enlightenments of modernity.

He goes on to write that prominent gay philanthropist Mitchell Gold told him, “church leaders must be made ‘to take homosexuality off the sin list.'”

Regardless of how one feels about gay rights or the abortion debate, it is interesting that liberals are finally getting around to openly confessing something all of us sort of know — yet few will say out loud: Achieving a liberal social agenda will necessarily require first extirpating many “deep-seated” Christian values and tenets.

Mom Turns 15-Year-Old Son In For Sexual Assault

A 15-year-old Illinois native who allegedly beat, robbed, and sexually assaulted a woman was turned in by his very own mother, a court heard Thursday.

Deshawn Isabelle allegedly attacked a woman on the Chicago subway, punching her in the face, dragging her by her hair, and reaching down her pants to penetrate her before stealing her iPhone and $2000 from her purse, ABC 7 reports.

Isabelle, who reportedly threw the phone in a puddle and spent the cash on candy and Air Jordan jumpsuits, is in custody on a $1 million bond after his mother recognized him in a surveillance video and turned him in to police.

Isabelle and the victim two were alone on the blue line train when the incident occurred in the middle of the day, just around 3 p.m. Monday.

“She sat down and the offender attacked her from behind. He knocked her down to the ground and attacked her,” Det. Jackie Mok, Chicago Police Dept told ABC 7.

Isabelle is being charged as an adult for the robbery and aggravated criminal sexual assault, which left the victim hospitalized overnight with a concussion. Even though the mother turned her son in, she still had her protective instincts.

“Quit talking about that s— about my child,” she yelled at the bond hearing Thursday.

Obama Hammers Dems For Opposing Free Trade

President Barack Obama took a stand against his own party Thursday, telling a group of progressives that Democrats who oppose free trade “don’t know what they’re talking about.”

Addressing a meeting of the progressive group Organizing for Action, Obama said he wanted to “set the record straight” about why he supports free-trade agreements such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which many Democrats in Congress, most notably Sen. Elizabeth Warren, strongly oppose. (RELATED: Trade Bill Puts Boehner and Pelosi Between Barack and Their Parties)

The TPP is a draft agreement among 12 Pacific countries — including the U.S., Japan, and Australia — that calls for eliminating tariffs and other trade barriers, as well as cooperating to create legal and regulatory coherence that would in theory make trade more efficient.

Republicans are largely on board with the deal, which the White House has been negotiating since 2011, but many Democrats fear that TPP would lead to outsourcing of U.S. jobs to countries with lower labor standards, according to USA Today.

Obama acknowledged that, “Trade has always been tough, and it’s always been tough especially in the Democratic Party,” but sought to reassure hesitant party members that TPP would not turn out to be a repeat of NAFTA, which some blame for increased outsourcing in the early 2000’s. (RELATED: Time to Finalize the TPP)

“A lot of [previous] trade deals didn’t include the kinds of protections that we’re fighting for today,” Obama noted, arguing that TPP “is the most progressive trade agreement in our history.”

Obama went on to assert that TPP has “strong provisions for workers, strong provisions for the environment … so when people say that this trade deal is bad for working families, they don’t know what they’re talking about.”

While Obama’s speech addressed the main economic concerns surrounding TPP, though, his efforts may not be enough to placate Sen. Warren, who complained in an interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow on Wednesday that Obama has not publicized details of the agreement, according to RT News.

Warren’s criticism is related to Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) legislation that is currently advancing through Congress, which would allow Obama to present the deal to Congress for an up-or-down vote with no opportunity for amendments. (RELATED: TPP Fast-Tracking is Designed to Hide a Bad Deal From Americans)

“The president says he wants the American people to judge this deal based on the facts, but to do that, he’s got to make the deal public,” Warren told Maddow. “Otherwise the American people can’t judge it on the facts.”
