Jeb Bush: Don't give me more than $1M ... for now

Jeb Bush: Don't give me more than $1M ... for now

Jeb Bush has told donors not to give him more than $1 million this quarter in hopes he will not be painted as a candidate beholden to the wealthy, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

His team is reportedly also hoping that the cap will allow them to build a wider donor base.

The request reflects the potential drawbacks of very wealthy donors giving outsized sums to candidates. Megadonors to candidates on both sides of the aisle, from the conservative Koch brothers to environmentalist Tom Steyer, have been demonized by their ideological opponents.

Though he has yet to launch a campaign, Bush has been looking to get commitments from Republican donors in the lead-up to an announcement. He has reportedly asked donors not to back other candidates if they are backing him, and is said to be looking to raise $100 million in the first quarter of fundraising.

Bush is currently fundraising for his Right to Rise super-PAC, which is seen as an organization designed to help him launch a campaign.
