Unarmed White Man Shot By Police: No Riots, Al Sharpton Silent, Obama Keeps Golfing
By Brian Anderson, August 23, 2014.
With the outrage over Michael Brown’s shooting death at the hands of police gobbling up the headlines, rioters and activists alike may have missed the story of Dillon Taylor. The 20-year old unarmed man was shot to death by police in Utah just days after Brown met a comparable fate in Ferguson, MO. The similarity of the two shootings is eerie, yet there are no riots, Sharptons, or Justice Department investigations in Utah. Oh, did I mention that Taylor was white?
It may come as a shock to all of the leftist pundits and civil rights activists calling for justice in Missouri that white guys actually get shot by the police too, even unarmed ones. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that on August 11 Dillon Taylor was exiting a Salt Lake City 7-11 when police, responding to a man with a gun call, shot him to death. No weapon was recovered from the scene.
Actually, this case sounds much worse than the Ferguson one. By most accounts, Michael Brown attacked the officer that shot him, but Taylor did nothing even close to that. He was apparently listening to music with headphones on when the police arrived. He ignored their commands briefly because he didn’t notice them. Eventually, the cops got his attention and he turned off the music.
Dillon’s brother Jerrail explains:
“He couldn’t hear them, so he just kept walking. Then … they had guns pointed at his face. That’s when he turned off the music,” he said. “I saw them point guns at my brother’s face, and I knew what was going to happen.”
One officer told Dillon Taylor to get on the ground, while another told him to put his hands on his head.
“He got confused, he went to pull up his pants to get on the ground, and they shot him,” Jerrail Taylor said.
He didn’t have a weapon, didn’t attack or confront officers in any way, he just tried to pull his pants up a little bit so he could get on the ground comfortably. Dillon Taylor was shot twice and died at the scene. Cops need to see a weapon, or at least what they think is one, before they use deadly force. This looks like a really bad shooting.
In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find a less justified police shooting but for some reason Salt Lake City didn’t erupt in weeks of rioting and looting. Al Sharpton didn’t tow a caravan of media into Utah to meet with Taylor’s family. Jesse Jackson didn’t show up begging for donations. President Obama didn’t address Taylor’s shooting between rounds of golf, nor did he send in Eric Holder to mete out some federal justice.
Making this hypocrisy a bit ironic, there are reports that at least one of the officers that shot Taylor was black. WND says the SLC police chief described one of the officers as “non-white” while some of the witnesses claim he is in fact black. There is police body camera footage of the incident but it isn’t being released at this time.
Clearly the media and outraged activists don’t actually care when an unarmed young man is gunned down by the police; they only make a big stink if that man happens to be black and the shooting officer is white. The total lack of coverage of Dillon Taylor’s death proves this beyond a shadow of a doubt.
