Report: Walker not personally a target of criminal probe

Report: Walker not personally a target of criminal probe

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) is not personally a target in an ongoing criminal probe, according to the lawyer for the special prosecutor investigating the case.

Randall Crocker, an attorney for special prosecutor Francis Schmitz, tells the Wisconsin State Journal that when the probe was halted by a judge, "Governor Walker was not a target of the investigation. At no time has he been served with a subpoena."

Recently released court documents had suggested that Walker was a target and stood accused of helping to organize the "criminal scheme" to coordinate outside group spending with his campaign's efforts. But Crocker's comments indicate that the investigation has focused on Walker's aides.

"Contained in these documents is a reference to the request for production of documents that relates to an alleged criminal scheme. Gov. Walker's name was included in this reference," Crocker said. "While these documents outlined the prosecutor's legal theory, they did not establish the existence of a crime; rather, they were arguments in support of further investigation to determine if criminal charges against any person or entity are warranted."

The case was halted late this spring by a federal judge, but that decision is under appeal.

The ongoing case is a political headache for Walker during his reelection battle against businesswoman Mary Burke (D), and could potentially have an impact on his presidential aspirations in 2016.
