In appearance on Tuesday's "The Colbert Report" on Comedy Central, former Florida Republican Gov. Charlie Crist, now a Democratic hopeful for the same position, made the charge that race was a motivating factor behind the backlash of his hug with President Barack Obama back in 2009.
"Sadly, I think another part of it was that he was a Democrat. But not just a Democrat, an African American," Crist said. "I've seen a level of vitriol directed at this president that I have never seen directed at President Kennedy or maybe President Johnson or even President Carter," he said.
