Candy Crowley Tries, Fails to Trap Rand Paul on Immigration Bill

on Sun, 23 Jun 2013

CNN State of the Union host Candy Crowley tried to trap Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) with a question this Sunday based on a false premise with regard to the newly repackaged “Gang of Eight” immigration bill with an amendment from Sens. Bob Corker (R-TN) and John Hoeven (R-ND).

When Crowley asked Paul how he was going to vote on the immigration bill amendment and on the bill as a whole, he responded: “I’m all in favor of immigration reform, but I’m like most conservatives in the country in that I think reform should be dependent on border security first. So, I introduced an amendment that would have done just that: border security first, and then immigration reform with congressional checks on whether or not it’s occurring. That wasn’t voted in favorably. So, without some congressional authority and without security I can’t support the final bill.”

Crowley followed with a question that apparent to be an attempt to make Paul's stance seem unreasonable.

Crowley asked: “So, you’re a ‘no’ despite the fact they are pouring $30 billion worth of Border Patrol, they are doubling the size of the border where we’re told that illegal entry is way down. They’re going to have 24/7 drone coverage of the border. Does that not tell you the border is going to be secure?”

As Breitbart News has detailed extensively over the weekend, any and all of this new technology and money being thrown at the border in the repackaged bill would only happen after legalization, or amnesty, for illegal aliens begins--if it ever happens at all.

Several new loopholes and waivers were inserted into the more-than-thousand-page that allow Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano (or any of her successors) to decide she just does not want to use any of that technology laid out in the bill, orthat she does not want to build a fence

In addition, there is another loophole that shows not a single new Border Patrol agent would need to be at the border until 2021, eight years from now. Another never-ending loopholepermanently offers citizenship to illegal aliens who overstay visas.

Paul dutifully answered Crowley's question, regardless.

“It may, but we’ve thrown a lot of money at a lot of problems in our country,” Paul said. “To me, what really tells me that they’re serious is letting Congress vote on whether the border is secure.

:If the people in the country want to be assured that we will not get another 10 million people to come here illegally over the next decade, they have to believe that they get a vote through their Congress.”
