To get the country out of its debt and deficit fix, President Obama must lead.

President Obama is giving back 5% of his $400,000 salary to show solidarity with federal workers hit by the dread sequester. That’s not much of a nick to a man who has no worries about living expenses and has plenty of independent income, to boot.
But, hey, symbolism counts.
It’s an appropriate gesture for a debate about debt and deficits that’s shallow, thanks in no small part to Obama.
The dread sequester — remember that? — went into effect one month ago, following weeks of presidential fear-mongering about the automatic cuts. The storm was coming, he proclaimed, the flood. Get in the ark.
Yet while it’s raining around the country and will rain more as budget clouds move overhead, the arbitrary automatic spending cuts have destroyed nothing and solved nothing.
Which means the President will need to lead by . . . leading — not by gimmicks. He’ll eventually have to find common ground with congressional Republicans.
