Presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney opened up a new line of attack against President Obama on Tuesday, saying that the Democrat wants to gut a landmark welfare reform measure by lifting work requirements in the law signed by Democrat predecessor Bill Clinton.
In a new television ad and conference call with reporters, the Romney camp criticized the Obama administration’s recent announcement that it would start considering giving states waivers so they can come up with their own ways to deliver so-called Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) programs.
“The Obama administration is asserting the authority to waive the core work requirement that is a fundamental piece of the bipartisan compromise of 1996,” Jonathan Burks, Romney’s deputy policy director, told reporters.
