Obama's Threat to the American Voters

Obama's Threat to the American Voters

By Geoffrey Normanon Thu, 13 Nov 2014

They lost the election but never mind.  As Mike Lillis of The Hill reports:

Wary that President Obama might back away from vows to ease deportations unilaterally, House Democrats on Wednesday sought to hold the president’s feet to the fire.

When you make a threat (and that is what you are doing when you hold someone’s feet to the fire) then you need some way to escalate, to bring on more pain.  You need, in short, a fire. What do the “House Democrats” propose?  To taunt the President one more time?  Boo him at the State of the Union?  Those, that is, who are still around to do so.

They probably intend to shame him for … well, for not doing what the voters pretty clearly do not want done.

But, then, perhaps those House Democrats don’t really need to hold their collective breath until their face turns (appropriately) blue.  As Justin Sink, also at The Hill reports:

President Obama has taken significant steps to the left since his party’s devastating losses in the midterm elections.

This is the way President Obama handles losing, according to Robert Shrum who is good at explaining losses since he has had plenty of practice at losing.

He’s at his best when his back is against the wall,” said Democratic strategist Bob Shrum. “Jeremiah Wright in 2008, Scott Brown’s election in 2009, after the first debate in 2012 — he comes back and tends to fight pretty hard. He’s a fourth-quarter player, and he’s in the fourth quarter of his presidency.”

Nothing here about that thing we did recently that is called “an election.”  If we are to follow the football metaphor all the way out, then the president is sucking it up, buckling his chin strap, digging down deep and taking it to his opponents who are … the American voters.
